Day 968.
It is my opinion that yesterday we saw a planned attempt to attack our democracy again. There were two things that happened that cannot simply be argued away by them being a coincidence.
The first thing was the Hungarian Prime Minister, Victor Orban, was welcomed by our dear leader at the White House. Orban is a dictator wannabe who has cozied up to Putin over the past years all the while being part of NATO. He has attacked the free press in his country, he has attacked univerisities, he has tried to stifle the judicial system of his country, and he has made most of the press in the country government run.
He has made untold attacks against Jews and Muslims. He has watched as anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim attacks in his country spiral. He has blocked Syrian refugees from the civil war from seeking asylum in his country. The man is a thug and a white nationalist running a country in Eastern Europe.
He is so bad, none of the other European democratic countries want anything to do with him. All democracies in Europe refuse to meet with him or offer “official” state visits by him to their country. Yet, our dear leader has a different view of the man.
Our dear leader obviously has a totally different view of Orban compared to his neighbors. He said: “Victor Orban has done a tremendous job in so many different ways. Highly respected. Respected all over Europe. Thank you very much for being at the White House. Thank you very much. It’s a great honor.”
But that wasn’t enough for trump either. He further said: “People have a lot of respect for this prime minister. He’s a respected man. And I know he’s a tough man, but he’s a respected man. And he’s done the right thing, according to many people, on immigration.
I think John Weaver, a Republican political consultant who ran former Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s campaign for the GOP presidential nomination in 2016 said it best. “Orban would be in trump’s cabinet if he were an American. Where do he and trump disagree?”
Then, while the love fest between two dictator wannabe’s were in session, the political hack masquerading as our Attorney General added gasoline to the fire. It was reported by several media outlets that he was beginning an “investigation” into the start of the Russia probe. He was effectively opening an “investigation into the investigators”. Something his boss has wanted for two years.
This was anticipated for weeks, especially after Barr said in a Congressional testimony that he thought there was “spying” on the trump campaign. He said: “I think spying on a political campaign is a big deal. I think spying did occur. But the question is whether it was … adequately predicated. I’m not suggesting it wasn’t predicated. I need to explore that.”
Of course in the usual Trumpian manner of throwing out accusations out-of-hand, he refused to say what made him think the campaign was spied on.
Furthermore, he is making no bones about what outcome he intends to have come forth. He appointed John Durham, the U.S. Attorney in Connecticut. Durham was appointed by trump to his position in 2017.
Of course there is no public evidence that anyone “spied” on the trump campaign. And, Christopher Wray, the FBI Director said just last week that the work done by bureau agents was not “spying”. But, that doesn’t make trump happy so Barr is “only following orders” from his boss.
This president wants all sorts of investigations conducted by his political hack. He wants investigations against his political opponents like Biden and he want investigations against law enforcement agents because they dared to investigate him. Hell, he even wants more investigations against Hillary Clinton.
He is refusing to abide by the Constitution by refusing subpoenas from Congress in their oversight responsibilities. He is demanding that former members of his administration refuse to testify at Congressional hearings. He is thumbing his nose at our Constitution.
Yesterday we saw our dear leader welcome a dictator wannabe from Hungary to the White House and praise him and call him a “respected man” despite the fact that the rest of Europe does not “respect” him. The only people who “respect” Orban are white nationalists like trump.
Then to prove that trump is “just as tough” as Orban, our fake Attorney General decided to “investigate the investigators”. Instead of complying with a subpoena to submit the full unredacted Mueller report so Congress has the full story, he diverts attention and begins an investigation into his own department.
If anyone had any doubts about our president’s disregard and total contempt for our Constitution and our democracy, yesterday should throw off all doubts about that. He has told us through his actions that he plans to be our dictator.
And, our Republican Politburo continues to remain mute about all of these actions. They seemingly want to be the Politburo for a dictator. That is the real problem we face in this Constitutional Crisis. It is very hard to stop autocracy from taking place when one of the political parties is all for it.
And, the shirts keep marching along.
